Juventus need to prioritize signing Paul Pogba over anything else.

After more than a month of negotiating with Barcelona, Juventus have completed a swap deal that will see Miralem Pjanic get his dream move to Camp Nou with the young and better Arthur Melo coming back the other way to Turin. It’s a tremendous piece of business for Juve that makes the midfield younger and more robust, as the middle of the park has been the glaring weakness in Maurizio Sarri’s aging squad.

But the midfield upgrades should not stop there. Free 2019 summer signings Adrien Rabiot and Aaron Ramsey have been mediocre options for the Bianconeri to this point, and Rabiot absolutely must go. In the current market, Rabiot and Ramsey won’t fetch much, especially when considering their wages.

However, Rabiot and Ramsey are quality players who can help teams with the budget to take them on, specifically teams in the Premier League. More importantly, Rabiot, Ramsey, or even both could be used to entice a specific Premier League club into trading Juventus a specific player who was once a superstar in Serie A before becoming a world-record signing.

More from Old Juve

Paul Pogba is the missing piece for Juve. The former Bianconeri star is still one of the world’s best midfielders, even if a combination of Manchester United’s incompetent leadership and injuries have prevented Pogba from showing that quality recently.

A perfect passer, graceful dribbler, capable scorer, and astute reader of passing lanes, Pogba is one of the most well-rounded midfielders in the league. At Juve, he could return to the Mezzala role or even try something new.

90min.com’s Max Cooper has reported that signing Pogba is a “main priority” for the Bianconeri this summer. As he should be. Pogba’s wages won’t come cheap, but by using Rabiot and Ramsey in a swap deal – or even throwing in someone else like Daniele Rugani or Douglas Costa – Juve can both offset the cost in transfer price and wages.

Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones, in a piece highlighting how Juve aim to upgrade their squad using these types of swap deals, likewise writes that “some” within Juve’s ranks view Pogba as their “dream signing”.

Juventus aim to be the biggest club in the world. There is no “second” here, as evidenced by the moves they have made since taking one of the world’s biggest global stars, Cristiano Ronaldo, from Real Madrid after his most recent Champions League triumph. They’ve signed the world’s best young center back in Matthijs de Ligt and nabbed an ascending player from another La Liga powerhouse in Arthur Melo.

The Old Lady of Turin has designs on greatness, but they only have two true superstars in their squad heading into the summer 2020 transfer window; the aging Cristiano Ronaldo and then Paulo Dybala. They need another superstar player in his prime, preferably a midfielder who can help the younger players like Rodrigo Bentancur and Arthur while serving Ronaldo and Dybala up top. There can’t be a better option than Pogba, who is a proven success story in Turin.
