Can Juve cash in on Dusan Vlahovic?

After being dumped out of the Champions League and missing out on financial bonuses, Juve are preparing to offload Dusan Vlahovic in the summer.

The forward has totally fallen out of favour with head coach Thiago Motta, but remains a valuable asset on paper to the Bianconeri.

Vlahovic is the club’ top scorer this season with 13 goals, but the arrival of Kolo Muani on loan has left the Serbia striker in the doldrums.

The French international, who failed to ignite his career at Paris Saint-Germain, has taken over Vlahovic’s role to spearhead the attack. Muani may be in superb form in Serie A, but he has been made to look very ordinary in the two Champions League matches against PSV Eindhoven.

Muani seems likely to be retained by PSG when he returns in the summer, but that’s only if he continues banging in goals for Juventus.

The Bianconeri originally brought him in to rotate with Vlahovic, but his instant impact has resulted in being a starter under Motta and Vlahovic dropped to the bench.

Vlahovic is not getting much of a chance to show his skill set to potential suitors. Had Juventus negotiated past PSV, they would have faced Arsenal and no doubt Motta would have started with Vlahovic to showcase him.

With only a handful of games this year, Vlahovic has scored just once. He hit a spectacular strike as a second-half substitute in Juve’s 4-1 home win over 10-men Empoli.

His contract expires at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, so understandably Juventus were eager to cash in on the 25-year-old during the winter transfer market.

This proved unsuccessful. It was only Premier League clubs that showed any interest in the former Fiorentina goal machine.

His high salary demands, he reportedly earns €12 million (US$12.5m) a season, and the price tag of €80 million (US$83.7m) deterred sides like Arsenal and Chelsea from making a bid last month.

With Motta constantly benching Vlahovic, and rarely unleashing him as a substitute, his value has slipped by a whopping €20m. Should he continue to be utilised so infrequently by the manager, then his value will keep tumbling and concern the club board.

Despite seemingly falling off the radar of Arsenal and Chelsea, who are both in desperate need of a hot-shot striker and scouring other options, there are a handful of other Premier League sides linked with Vlahovic.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are still tracking his situation with the Turin titans, while West Ham United have recently shown interest. Vlahovic could be put off by the fact all three clubs are struggling this term, so there’s no prospect of European action next season.

There could be a new coach at both United and Spurs during the summer, with ex-Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri mentioned as a potential successor to United’s Ruben Amorim and Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou.

West Ham had preliminary talks with Allegri about becoming their new head coach, but due to his salary demands and the fact that he would bring in his own coaching staff put off the Hammers.

Former Chelsea flop Graham Potter was installed last month rather than Allegri, but he has made a stuttering start with the Londoners. If their dismal displays and poor results continue, then discussions with Allegri may be reopened during the summer months with Potter given the boot.

Vlahovic now has to patiently wait to see if his former boss is lured to the Premier League, because being reacquainted with Allegri could revitalise his career.

His ever-decreasing value means that Juventus may accept a swap deal rather than let him become a free agent in just over a year’s time.

United could contemplate a swap deal involving Joshua Zirkzee for Vlahovic, while Newcastle United may consider a switch with Sandro Tonali.

Zirkzee, who played under Motta at Bologna before signing for Manchester United last July, has failed to live up to the hype of his €42.5m (US$44.5m) price tag.

Although the Netherlands international Zirkzee has yet to impress, United would have to be certain about Vlahovic to fork out a high salary as they are currently on a cost-cutting exercise. The club are hoping to offload former England forward Marcus Rashford during the summer, who is a high earner and currently on loan at Aston Villa.

Newcastle, who are in the mix to qualify for European soccer next season, are keen on Juve’s Douglas Luiz and discussed a straight swap for former AC Milan ace Tonali.

Alexander Isak, a star striker for Newcastle this term, is wanted by a clutch of clubs that includes Arsenal. Head coach Eddie Howe would need to have an out-and-out striker lined up if Isak leaves.

Securing the signatures of the Juve duo Luiz and Vlahovic is being considered by Newcastle, but only if they need to replace both Tonali and Isak.

Should Juve boss Motta continue to subject Vlahovic to a bit role, and down the pecking order, then his sell on value will keep diminishing at an alarming rate.

Motta surely won’t like any interference from the club board about trying to give Vlahovic minutes to maintain interest in their asset, but he will be pressured if push comes to shove.

Getting Vlahovic off Juve’s payroll with a summer sale appears to be a priority after the club failed to reach the highly lucrative last 16 in the Champions League.

With just a season-and-a-half for Vlahovic to run down his contract, the reality is he’s likely to either join the megabucks Saudi Pro League or be loaned out to a European club in the summer than to be sold to a Premier League outfit.
