Former Juventus president gets frank about Tudor and Vlahovic

Juve’s season kicked off with solid results but two draws on the spin has thrown up question marks about Igor Tudor’s suitability.

There is an obvious comparison to ex-Bianconeri boss Thiago Motta, who started his reign with dynamic displays before the rot set in with a string of stalemates that ultimately cost him his job.

Not losing was a priority for Motta, who constantly achieved that feat and only suffered three Serie A defeats from 27 top-tier league games last term.

Tudor’s managerial Juve record of four draws from 13 Serie A matches is nothing to panic about, and he has only tasted one defeat at the helm.

Juventus late, late show

Yet it took stoppage time goals to register a thrilling Derby d’Italia success over Inter Milan and to square matters against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Both opponents were heavily depleted, and exposed Juve’s defense frailties with keeper Michele Di Gregorio coming under the cosh for his two mistakes that both led to goals for Borussia.

Juve’s labored 1-1 draw at Hellas Verona, full of controversial decisions that included a goal against them being disallowed following a VAR check, temporarily lifted the club top of the table. Napoli have since reeled off their fourth Serie A win on the bounce to leap over Juventus.

Cobolli Gigli speaks out

Giovanni Cobolli Gigli, who previously served as Juventus president between 2006 and 2009, spoke frankly about two key figures at the Bianconeri.

At 1 Football Club, he was adamant that he would choose to play striker Dusan Vlahovic, who is making an impact this campaign as a supersub, because the club has to pay him high wages.

He added that if Juventus were to propose a contract renewal, it should be with lower figures, as he believes it is not ethical for Juventus to pay such salaries now.

Plenty of interest in Vlahovic

There is interest from La Liga, Premier League clubs and Serie A clubs in acquiring the 25-year-old Serbia star. However, Juventus are exploring a contract extension but on a lower annual salary than his whopping €12 million (US$14m) contract, which expires next June.

Cobolli Gigli enthused about Tudor, who was partially picked to lead the club because he was the cheapest option, and said: “He is doing an excellent job, proving his worth.

“The [recent] results are deserved. The team has renewed its mentality under Tudor, and what we’ve seen so far [this season] has been exciting.”
