Juventus explore other midfielders after Frattesi swap falters

Inter Milan's stance to avoid strengthening Serie A rivals is likely to scupper losing their little-used 26-year-old during the winter transfer window.

Bianconeri boss Luciano Spalletti has turned his troops into winners in a short space of time, with seven triumphs from their past eight matches.

The former Italy head coach is aware that he could lose their emerging superstar Kenan Yildiz to a Premier League side next month, with Tottenham Hotspur joining the list of potential London suitors.

Spalletti has naturally turned his attention to a replacement, with three candidates who could fill the Turkish talent's boots in an attacking midfield role. Davide Frattesi, Luka Sucic and Quentin Timber are on the club's radar.

Inter Milan's Frattesi is back on the wanted list of both AS Roma and Juventus, although bolstering direct Italian top tier competitors is not a scenario that the current Serie A leaders seem to entertain.

Yet central midfielder Frattesi wants to switch sides during the January transfer window, in a bid to get more minutes that will improve his prospects for being selected by Italy who could tackle the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Problems with Frattesi deal

With Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Premier League outfit Newcastle United likely to prepare an offer for Frattesi, who is valued at €35 million (US$41.2m), a loan with an obligation to buy is most likely to table. Juventus and Roma are also in the mix for the 26-year-old.

Juve's proposed swap deal for Frattesi, which involved former PSG target Khephren Thuram, was refused point blank. The Nerazzurri want a guaranteed income rather than an exchange.

Real Sociedad's Sucic and Feyenoord's Quentin Timber lead the back-up plan for Juventus should the Turin titans fail to land Frattesi.

Sucic, a box-to-box midfielder, is not wishing to leave La Liga despite Juve showing interest in the 23-year-old Croatia international.

Juventus among sides chasing Timber

Timber is nearing the end of his contract at Feyenoord, with the Dutch club keen to cash in on their midfielder next month rather than lose him as a free agent next summer.

Borussia Dortmund, Brentford and Juventus lead the race for the 23-year-old Netherlands international, who has a hefty price tag despite his contract soon expiring. Timber has yet to provide clarity on his future, despite being under pressure from Feyenoord head coach Robin van Persie to make a decision.

Arsenal, Fenerbahce, Manchester United and West Ham United have set their sights on signing Timber in the summer. He joined Feyenoord in July 2022, and this season has scored twice and provided three goal assists in 15 top-flight appearances.

With a plethora of other clubs also linked with Juve's trio of targets, Spalletti's recent run of results should help attract a player who believes in his tactical approach and ambition for the club.
