Juventus should join Serie A chase for World Cup winner

A short-term defensive solution for the Bianconeri could work wonders for a veteran seeking a European top flight team in January.

AC Milan and Inter Milan have been linked with center-back Sergio Ramos, who recently left Mexico giants C.F. Monterrey after just 15 appearances. Being a free agent should greatly interest Juventus, whose defense was wobbly throughout Igor Tudor's tenure and remain wobbly under former Italy boss Luciano Spalletti,

The 39-year-old's contract with the Liga MX Apertura side was due to expire on new year's eve, with Monterrey deciding not to extend his deal. Former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis was the manager when Ramos joined, but he was replaced last May by Spaniard Domenec Torrent.

Ramos wore the no93 shirt at Monterrey, which was the number of minutes on the clock when he scored the equalizer in the 2014 Champions League final. Real Madrid went on to demolish Atletico Madrid 4-1 in extra time.

The Spanish defender was offered to Inter during the last winter transfer window, but he joined the Mexico club in February as a free agent. Ramos had been without a team since leaving Sevilla at the end of 2023/24 La Liga campaign.

He won the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Spain, sandwiched between lifting the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.

Ramos kicked off his career with Sevilla and joined Real Madrid in 2005 where he won 22 trophies during a majestic 16 years at the Bernabeu.

Having chalked up a staggering 180 appearances for Spain, Ramos' goal is to compete in the next year's World Cup finals.

Ex-Real Madrid star up for grabs

He needs to be playing regularly in Europe to have a shot at being selected for his country at the prestigious soccer spectacle that will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

A short-term defensive addition would suit Juventus head coach Spalletti, whose contract expires at the end of the Serie A season although could be extended for one more campaign.

Having Ramos in Juve's ranks would be a boost, particularly as he won the Champions League four times with Real Madrid, despite the club seemingly moving away from signing aging stars on inflated wages.

Ramos is fast approaching 900 club games following a glittering career that encompassed Sevilla, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Monterrey.

Ramos attracts Serie A interest

He was recently linked with a potential move to Manchester United as well Serie A, with Juventus yet to confirm any serious interest.

The Bianconeri's recruitment drive next month is concentrating on strengthening the defense. There is always some speculation about bringing in more midfielders, especially as emerging superstar Kenan Yildiz is on the radar of European giants.

Juventus are also aiming to increase their options upfront following the long-term injury to star striker Dusan Vlahovic.

There could be some major additions at the Turin titans during the January transfer window, with free agent Ramos surely on the club's wanted list to add leadership skills, vast experience and a winning mentality.
