What’s at stake
Both teams have Croatian managers and each have yet to lose an Italian top-tier game this campaign. They are chasing maximum points from this contest in a bid to remain serious Scudetto contenders, and apply the pressure on Serie A table-topping Napoli.
The Bianconeri have registered six successive league home wins for an impressive 10 out of 11 Serie A triumphs inside at the Allianz Stadium, and will be hopeful of another victory as La Dea coach Ivan Juric has a poor managerial Serie A record against Juventus.
This top of the table clash sees second-placed Juve favorites over fifth-positioned Atalanta, who scored seven goals and netted six Serie A points from their past two league matches.
Recent form
Juventus extended their unbeaten run to nine games after being held at Hellas Verona, when Tudor's tactics went to pot when he introduced his two summer signing strikers. Goal poacher Jonathan David and unorthodox striker Lois Openda were unable to make much impact, with the formation leaving gaps in midfield.
Following a hat-trick of Serie A successes, the Bianconeri had to settle for a share of the spoils in Verona, where there were some controversial decisions made. Tudor’s tactical approach will surely be tweaked soon to tighten the defence and hot-shot center forward Dusan Vlahovic is best suited to appearing as a second-half supersub.
Atalanta kicked off their campaign with two draws, but won their last two games to remain within touching distance of pack chasing defending champions Napoli.
The Bergamaschi have registered a win and a draw on their travels this term, and bagged nine Serie A goals overall that is one more strike than Juve. The Bianconeri have relied on Vlahovic's arrival from the bench to score goals.
Head-to-head
Their last meeting sealed silverware for Juventus in mid-August, with their third pre-season triumph on the bounce and David finally found the back of the net.
Atalanta hammered lacklustre Juve 4-0 in Turin last March, which was one of the nail’s in the coffin for the then head coach Thiago Motta.
The Bergamaschi have finished the past two seasons among the top four and are flying after their slow start to the season, while in contrast Juventus were fortunate not to lose their past three games against Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Verona respectively.
Atalanta have only managed five victories in 47 Serie clashes with Juventus, managing 14 draws and suffering 28 defeats. Yet the pair have finished all square in nine of their past 14 league encounters.
Team news
Tudor’s pre-match statements do not always ring true. Despite his positivity about Vasilije Adzic, Dusan Vlahovic and Edon Zhegrova in his pre-match press conference, the trio can be expected to be utilized as substitutes.
Francisco Conceicao (illness) and Fabio Miretti (thigh) are Juve’s only concern.
For the third match on the trot the Bianconeri face a depleted team. Atalanta have numerous players on the treatment table with Mitchel Bakker (knee), Ederson (muscle), Isak Hien (thigh), Sead Kolašinac (knee), Giorgio Scalvini (muscle) and Nicola Zalewski (thigh) all sidelined.
Igor Tudor's quotes
“We had two days off before turning our attention towards Atalanta. Since Tuesday we have worked a lot, with real determination and intensity in preparation for this game between two Champions League teams, so it’s a high-level game.
“We played them in this summer but that counts for nothing. We’ll have to play attentively, careful not to give them any space that they can exploit.
“Ivan [Juric] is a friend. His work has often been underestimated, but he has always achieved good results with the teams he’s coached. He had some bad luck with Roma last year, and then in England, but his ability is clear for anybody to see.”
Long-term Juventus target Ademola Lookman is back for the Bergamo side to tackle Juve. The Nigerian striker, among Atalanta’s 2023/24 Europa League heroes, was chased by Inter Milan all summer and will be rested ready for another goal-getting season.
Team news
Expected line-ups
Juventus possible starting XI:
Di Gregorio - Gatti, Bremer, Kelly - Kalulu, Thuram, Locatelli, Cambiaso - McKennie, Yildiz - David
Atalanta possible starting XI:
Carnesecchi - Kossounou, Djimsiti, Ahanor - Bellanova, De Roon, Pasalic, Zappacosta - Samardzic, Sulemana - Lookman
Old Juve prediction
Juventus 2 Atalanta 2
Tudor's tactics during the season half in Verona were far from his usual cautious approach. His sides have been leaky at the back, and with Atalanta in red-hot form this contest should deliver end-to-end action inside the Allianz Stadium.
Atalanta would leapfrog over the hosts if they can carve out a victory, but they are missing some key figures so are likely to attack at every opportunity.
Expect another high-octane game like the thrilling Derby d'Italia, but Juventus seem to be lacking confidence since that triumph so an entertaining draw seems most likely.
