Recent form
Juve head coach Motta has experienced an horrendous couple of weeks, after being dumped out of the Champions League and Coppa Italia in the space of a week.
The former Bologna boss got a vote of confidence from the club following Thursday’s emergency meeting, as he has 12 Serie A games left to fight for the Scudetto.
Despite managing to draw half of their 26 league matches so far, Juve are on a roll of four consecutive Serie A victories since being beaten by Napoli in January. That is the Bianconeri’s only league defeat this term, and to lose to Verona seems unthinkable.
Yet Paolo Zanetti's side stunned highflying Fiorentina in their last outing, courtesy of the only goal in the game from Antoine Bernede in stoppage time, so should not be underestimated.
Verona have conceded just twice in their past four Serie A games if you take last month’s 5-0 mauling by Atalanta out of the equation, and will not be a pushover for Juventus.
The visitors should also be buoyed by the fact that Juventus Ultras plan to protest during the match, by ensuring that boos are constantly ringing around the Allianz Stadium.
Head-to-head
Dusan Vlahovic bagged a brace when these clubs last met, Juve romping to a 3-0 Serie A win inside the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi. It was an impressive triumph, as Verona had thrashed Napoli 3-0 the previous week.
Juventus have yet to lose at home to Verona in the top tier, with 28 triumphs from 33 encounters in Turin. The Bianconeri have beaten Verona in five of their past six games, keeping a clean sheet in five of those matches.
Striker Andrea Favilli, currently on loan at Bari from Genoa, was the last Verona scorer inside the Allianz Stadium. He broke the deadlock on the hour-mark, having appeared as a substitute just five minutes earlier. Dejan Kulusevki rescued a point for the defending champions with a 77th-minute equaliser minutes in October 2020.
Team news
Juve’s depleted defense means that Motta is likely to utilise Federico Gatti and Lloyd Kelly to try and snuff out any danger.
Despite a nightmare match for Vlahovic during the Coppa Italia debacle, he holds an impressive record against Verona with a total of six Serie A goals. The Serbia international found the back of the net against Cagliari, scoring a magnificent goal after 12 minutes in his first league start of 2025.
Kolo Muani was ineffective playing alongside Vlahovic in the Coppa Italia quarter-final defeat to injury ravaged Empoli, and has been unimpressive in recent outings. He is likely to be benched.
Andrea Cambiaso is back following a groin injury, while Douglas Luiz (ankle), Pierre Kalulu (muscle injury), Nicola Savona (thigh) and Renato Veiga (leg) are all sidelined. Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal and Arkadiusz Milik remain long-term absentees.
The visitors have key players out injured, including top scorer Casper Tengstedt (ankle), but are likely to welcome back winger Domagoj Bradaric from suspension. Amin Sarr and Tomas Suslov should spearhead the attack.
Players to watch
Juventus - Dusan Vlahovic
The 25-year-old is a better bet than Muani to start, especially with the expected boos from Curva Sud, and he will want to put behind his midweek woes with an explosive display.
A plethora of clubs are being linked with a summer swoop for a cut-price deal for Vlahovic, and if he can start banging in the goals over the next dozen Serie A games could be retained by the Bianconeri.
Possesses immense power, intelligent runs and a scoring prowess in the box. Vlahovic just needs some service to be back to his best.
Verona - Nicolas Valentini
The pacy Argentinian defender is proficient in all aspects, and uses his physicality to win tussles in and round the box.
Happy to go shoulder-to-shoulder with attackers, and will no doubt relish taking on the powerful pair of Muani and Vlahovic.
Expected line-ups
Juventus possible starting XI:
Di Gregorio; Weah, Gatti, Kelly, Cambiaso; Thuram, Locatelli; Gonzalez, McKennie, Yildiz; Vlahovic
Verona possible starting XI:
Montipo; Dawidowicz, Coppola, Valentini; Tchatchoua, Niasse, Bernede, Duda, Bradaric; Suslov, Sarr
OldJuve Prediction
Juventus 1 Hellas Verona 0
This is a potential banana skin for Motta, who is still aiming to guide Juve to their first Scudetto since the 2018/19 season.
The 42-year-old has a point to prove, and an emphatic victory would go some way towards convincing the club’s hierarchy and fans that Project Motta is gaining momentum.
It has been almost a year since the Gialloblu last registered back-to-back Serie A wins. Yet they will fancy their chances as their defence is tight, and the scheduled protests inside the Allianz Stadium could make some Juve players nervous.
