What’s at stake

Bragging rights matter, but whichever team secures victory will wish to be taken seriously as genuine Serie A title contenders.

Juve constantly conceded goals during pre-season contests, with their defensive vulnerability even exposed by Serie B minnows AC Reggiana in a 2-2 stalemate.

Yet they have kept back-to-back clean sheets, while at the other end of the pitch Dusan Vlahovic has turned into a supersub by netting on his two appearances.

Goal poacher Jonathan David has been the first choice forward for head coach Igor Tudor this term, but for such a huge clash the Canada hot-shot could be paired with Vlahovic.

As Inter Milan were stunned at home by Udinese in their last outing, manager Cristian Chivu will be chasing maximum points rather than a draw.

Their first away game of the season is a tough task, but the fact that RefCam is being trialled for this mouthwatering clash should avoid any controversy.

Recent form

Juventus extended their unbeaten run to six matches by edging 1-0 past resilient Genoa. This has been pretty impressive as they were tame during back-to-back defeats at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Two wins in Serie A, following notable triumphs at German giants Borussia Dortmund and their Bortolotti Trophy success over Atalanta, has got the Bianconeri bouncing.

There is renewed confidence from fans, players and pundits in how Juve could end up tackling this season.

Time will tell whether those deadline day transfer deals for Lois Openda and Edon Zhegrova were the club’s hierarchy pressing the panic button or become a gamble that pays dividends.

Inter replaced former Juventus managerial target Simone Inzaghi by luring Chivu from Parma, who shocked the Bianconeri towards the end of last term with a tactical masterclass to claim a deserved 1-0 win.

The Nerazzurri won all three of their pre-season friendlies, beating AS Monaco 2-1, requiring a 5-3 penalty shootout success to overcome AC Monza after finishing 2-2 and toyed with Olympiacos Piraeus to win 2-0.

Inter’s Serie A campaign kicked off with a 5-0 thumping of Torino, only to come a cropper with a 2-1 reversal to Udinese.

Head-to-head

Juventus were involved in two contrasting Italian top tier games against Inter last term, picking up four precious points under the then head coach Thiago Motta.

Motta’s first managerial Derby d’Italia ended in an eight-goal thriller with a share of the spoils in the remarkable 4-4 draw inside the San Siro last October. He followed that up by edging a 1-0 home victory in February.

They have played each other 184 times in Serie A, Juventus triumphing on 88 occasions, Inter picking up 49 wins and 47 draws.

Team news

Tudor’s pre-match statements do not always ring true. Although David is expected to start, with ever reliable striker Vlahovic likely to replace the target man during the second half.

Joao Mario, who offers pace and vision, should be offered the opportunity to fill the void left by Andrea Cambiaso’s two-match suspension.

Unorthodox Openda will probably be given the nod to make his Juve debut and take over the left wing role from injured Francisco Conceicao. The Portuguese ace suffered a muscle injury during training while on international duty.

Right winger Kenan Yildiz, who frequently tears down the flanks in Serie A, failed to impress for Turkey over the past fortnight. The 20-year-old was one of a handful of Juventus players who underwhelmed during the international break.

Conceicao joins Juan Cabal (knee), Fabio Miretti (thigh), Mattia Perrin (muscle) on the treatment table.

The Nerazzurri have the best attack in 2025 with 40 goals, and are the most prolific team this term with six strikes from five different players.

Chivu has no injury worries, just a selection headache as he wants to accommodate striking duo Francesco Pio Esposito and Marcus Thuram to play alongside Lautaro Martinez.

Players to watch

Juventus — Kenan Yildiz

The Turkish talent has been formidable for Juventus since he got his groove back under Tudor, and collected the team’s most valuable player for August.

Yildiz was magical in the Club World Cup, despite a poor showing from the majority of his team-mates. He followed that up in pre-season games and with two exceptional Serie A performances.

He seems to link up better with Vlahovic than David, with July’s rift between Yildiz and the Serbia striker long forgotten. So expect fireworks after Vlahovic is introduced.

Yildiz has yet to score in Serie A, but was involved in a slick one-two with Vlahovic against Parma, and will be biting at the bit to bounce back from his international disappointment.

Inter Milan — Hakan Calhanoglu

The Turkish captain has been a midfield maestro for Inter since he switched to Serie A for the 2017/18 campaign.

He is the club’s only player to have surpassed a Serie A half-century of both goals and assists in Serie A, with 58 goal assists and finding the back of the net 50 times.

Calhanoglu will be trying to snuff out any danger from Juve’s Openda, who will probably be giving his first run-out, or another whizzy winger.

Expected line-ups

Juventus possible starting XI:

Di Gregorio - Gatti, Bremer, Kelly - Kalulu, Thuram, Locatelli, Mario - Openda, Yildiz - David

Inter Milan possible starting XI:

Sommer - Akanji, Acerbi, Bastoni - Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Sucic, Dimarco - Thuram, Martinez

Old Juve prediction

Juventus 1 Inter Milan 1

Tudor, a former Juve defender, has gradually made his backline more solid but the visitors will be pouring forward at every opportunity in what should be box-to-box action inside the Allianz Stadium.

Chivu holds the advantage over meetings with Tudor. He was a tactical genius with Parma’s shock success last term. The pair squared up as players, Chivu earning two triumphs while Tudor notched one success. They settled for a share of the spoils in their other encounter.

As sixth-placed Inter are more desperate for points than Juve, no doubt they will at times go hell for leather before defending in their droves.

Juventus need to ensure that they don’t follow last season’s showing, which they kicked off with aplomb before Motta was happier to not lose rather than try to win maximum points.
