Revealed: Who helped Timothy Weah turn down Atlético de Madrid for Juventus
By Eduardo Razo
Timothy Weah is flourishing under new Juventus manager Thiago Motta as the United States international has impacted the squad's attack in a positive manner this 2024-25 season.
Weah has appeared in 11 contests across all competitions for the Old Lady, scoring four goals and recording two assists. The 24-year-old's most recent goal came this past weekend in the latest installment of the Derby della Mole, a game Juventus won 2-0.
Moreover, the striker is in impressive form as he's scored three goals in his last four matches. If Juventus want to challenge for the Serie A title and go on a deep run in the UEFA Champions League, they'll need scoring depth.
Timothy Weah almost didn't join Juventus
Weah joined the Turin-based club in 2023 from LOSC Lille, but he almost didn't join Juventus. Transfer expert Nicolò Schira recently revealed that LaLiga side Atlético de Madrid also had their eyes on Weah.
According to Schira, Atlético de Madrid was interested in signing Weah during the summer of 2023 and made a significant bid to Lille.
However, the winger ultimately chose to join Juventus, as playing in Serie A was a dream for him, following in the footsteps of his father, George Weah. His father encouraged him to sign with Juventus, guiding his decision.
Weah is under contract until 2028 and is hitting the prime years of his career, so Juventus could benefit from winning this race for the player. If he can be a versatile player who can provide scoring depth for Motta and his team, then the Serie A side will have a quality player on their hands for the foreseeable future.
