Ex-Arsenal scout's swoop for dream duo would solve Juventus conundrum

Damien Comolli, Juve’s new general manager, has a golden opportunity to make an immediate impact.

Comolli will be responsible for overseeing the soccer aspect of the senior men’s team as well as the commercial and marketing departments.

The former scout for Arsenal was unveiled on 1 June, having recently resigned from Ligue 1 club Toulouse.

He may raid the French top-flight to deal with Juve’s uncertainties in respect of their next permanent head coach and new striker, should Dusan Vlahovic depart this summer.

Comolli has the opportunity to enter talks with Lille OSC for their manager Bruno “Pep” Genesio and out-of-contract talisman forward Jonathan David.

Champions League

Genesio would probably seize the chance to compete in the Champions League next season, with Lille finishing their season in fifth to earn a place in the Europa League. Juventus will play in Europe's leading club competition, having finished fourth in Serie A.

The Frenchman’s high point last term was October’s Champions League 1-0 home win over Real Madrid, courtesy of David’s first-half penalty. Lille lost 3-2 on aggregate to Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the competition.

Genesio, who joined Lille last summer to take over from AC Milan-bound Paulo Fonseca, is reported in the French media to have a tricky professional relationship with club president Olivier Letang.

Yet Letang recently informed French sports paper L'Equipe: “Bruno is under contract. We’re very happy. He will be our coach next season.”

Free agents

There may well be frustration for Genesio regarding the Lille squad. Forward Chuba Akpom was the only arrival during the January transfer window, and pivotal players are due to leave on free transfers.

Midfield pair Remy Cabella and Angel Gomes, defender Samuel Umtiti and last season’s top scorer David will all become free agents on 30 June.

Inter Milan, Juventus and Napoli have been hotly pursuing New York-born Canada international David. There were reported talks between David’s representatives and Juventus in April.

As the 25-year-old is a prolific scorer, he has commanded a long list of admirers in England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Sole striker

David fitted in perfectly with Genesio’s favored 4-2-3-1 tactical formation, bagging 16 Ligue 1 goals to take his tally of strikes for Lille past a hundred.

Juve would have to splash the cash to secure the signature of David, with a signing bonus and commissions on top of an annual salary that's believed to be around the €7 million (US$7.95m) mark.

David seems a snip compared to Vlahovic, who Juventus are aiming to sell this summer, as the Serbia striker demands €12m (US$13.65m) a season.

Comolli has a great chance to score Brownie points so early in his new role, if he can persuade the dynamic duo from Lille’s dream team to join him at the Turin titans.
