What’s at stake
Victory is required to avoid a potential clash against Group H leaders Real Madrid in the last 16. Juve and Manchester City will battle it out to determine who wins Group G, with both of the European giants already guaranteed a last 16 knockout berth at the cash-rich 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The Bianconeri lead second-placed City courtesy of a slightly superior goal difference, the pair sit six points ahead of both Al-Ain FC and Wydad AC who will tackle each other at the same time.
Both Juventus and City have been scoring for fun in their group games against relative minnows, although a goal feast is not expected for their showdown inside the sweltering heat of the Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
Recent form
Juve polished off their Serie A season with back-to-back wins to clinch Champions League soccer next term. Juve’s Club World Cup debut has seen them follow up their 5-0 thumping of UAE Pro League side Al-Ain FC with a flattering 4-1 triumph over Moroccan heavyweights Wydad AC.
City, who failed to land a major trophy for only the second season since head coach Pep Guardiola joined in 2016, picked up a 2-0 success over Wydad AC before beating Al-Ain FC 6-0.
Defending champions City destroyed Fluminense 4-0 in the 2023 final, and face their nemesis Juventus in the group stage.
The Turin titans have collected four wins in their seven meetings with City, their most recent was December’s Champions League 2-0 home triumph where they tamed goal-machine Erling Haaland.
Team news
Although Juventus head coach Igor Tudor has squad members Bremer (center-back) and Arkadiusz Milik (striker) sidelined by long-term injuries, he has plenty of options but is probably sticking with an unchanged starting XI for the third game on the bounce.
Despite a dubious penalty being won and converted against Wydad AC by last season’s top scorer Dusan Vlahovic, the Serbia hot-shot appears unlikely to net a starting berth.
Nods are expected for loanees Francisco Conceicao and Kolo Muani with star player Kenan Yildiz aiming to score for a third game on the spin.
City will be without midfielder Mateo Kovacic (Achilles) and defender Rico Lewis (suspended), with teenage midfielder Claudio Echeverri (ankle) a doubt.
Rodri, the influential Spanish midfielder, will continue to be gently eased into the tournament with two cameo appearances so far on his return from last September’s ACL injury in the Premier League.
Players to watch
Juventus — Kenan Yildiz
The Turkish talent adds firepower and pace to prise open defenses. Already has three goals, but will be aiming to cap last term’s breakthrough season with another strike against mighty Manchester City.
The 20-year-old has gone from strength to strength since starting under Thiago Motta last term and then got his groove back under Tudor’s attacking formation.
Juve have constantly issued a hands off policy to a clutch of Premier League teams who were interested in acquiring his services.
Manchester City — Ederson
Veteran shotstopper Ederson, who wanted to move to the lucrative Saudi Pro League last summer and is expected to push for a switch during the off season, is well-known for his decision-making, fancy footwork and sharp reflexes.
Being so formidable with the ball at his feet and calm under pressure, the no1 plays a pivotal role for City’s build-up play.
With his future uncertain at the club, City have eyed up Juventus keeper Michele Di Gregorio and France international keeper Lucas Chevalier as potential replacements.
Expected line-ups
Juventus possible starting XI:
Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Kelly; Costa, Thuram, McKennie, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; Muani
Manchester City possible starting XI:
Ederson; Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, Ait-Nouri; Cherki, Reijnders; Savinho, Foden, Marmoush; Haaland
Old Juve prediction
Juventus 1 Manchester City 2
The stakes are high with maximum points vital to land an easier last 16 opponent than Real Madrid. Al-Hilal or RB Salzburg seem to be the most likely opponent for the Group G winner.
This tournament is a real money-spinner, with progress of paramount importance to Juventus financially. The Serie A squad is brimming with confidence and self-belief, but their defensive frailties against Al-Ain FC and Wydad AC were exposed although not punished.
Goal-hungry City are just finding their rhythm after brushing aside Al-Ain FC, and their firepower could prove too hot to handle for the Bianconeri in the second-half.
