What's at stake
Napoli will welcome former head coach Luciano Spalletti back to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday for a mouth-watering Serie A showdown. Both teams have hit fine form, including Coppa Italia victories.
Both clubs are seeking maximum points to stay within reach of a top four finish, with ex-Juventus boss Antonio Conte eyeing up a second Scudetto on the spin.
Both Conte and Spalletti are superb tacticians who are versatile in their formation set-up to beat opponents, although with three defenders for each side this latest encounter is likely to be a cagey game of cat-and-mouse.
The Bianconeri need to keep up with Scudetto rivals, and could leap from seventh spot to fourth place if results go in their favor over the weekend. Defeat by Napoli could leave them four points adrift of both Bologna and Como should they clock up wins at Lazio and Inter Milan respectively.
Recent form
After the Bianconeri netted a five-goal Champions League victory at Bodo/Glimt, they followed it up with a tense triumph at home to stuttering Serie A success over Cagliari and in midweek beat Udinese to breeze into the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.
Napoli recently struggled to secure wins, and face Juventus on an unbeaten run of five games. Spalletti has yet to taste defeat as Juve manager, but this is his sternest test to date with Serie A contests against Bologna and AS Roma before Christmas.
The Bianconeri cannot relinquish their Serie A position of seventh, and lie five points behind second-placed Napoli.
Turkish talent Kenan Yildiz has recently been stealing the show, and could soon be part of a tactical tweak upfront in the absence of Juve's star striker Dusan Vlahovic.
Napoli’s midweek Coppa Italia win over Cagliari was decided by the lottery of a tense penalty shootout following a fiercely fought 1-1 stalemate.
Conte, renowned for setting up a solid defense, has seen his troops only concede three goals from their past six matches.
Head-to-head
Juventus have tackled Napoli a whopping 158 times. The Bianconeri have bagged 71 victories, been involved in 49 draws and tasted 38 defeats.
The pair played out a scoreless draw inside the Allianz Stadium in September 2024, but Napoli chalked up a 2-1 success on their own turf last January to continue the momentum of having the upper hand in fixtures against the Turin titans.
Team news
Goalkeepers Mattia Perin (discomfort), Carlo Pinsoglio (calf), defensive trio Gleison Bremer (knee), Federico Gatti (knee) and Daniele Rugani (muscle) plus forwards Arkadiusz Milik (shin) and Vlahovic (adductor) are all sidelined.
Yildiz should be a certain starter, but Spalletti could shake up his tactics after Jonathan David failed to truly impress as the lone target against Udinese despite twice coming close to scoring. The pace of Lois Openda, on the wanted list of German and Spanish sides with David and Vlahovic, could be the deciding factor to face Napoli.
Napoli have been dealt another midfield injury blow, with Stanislav Lobotka (thigh) ruled out of Sunday’s showdown a few days ago.
Conte has missed Manchester City icon Kevin De Bruyne, who suffered a thigh injury while converting a penalty against Inter in October. Zambo Anguissa (muscle) and Billy Gilmour (thigh) are the other midfielders absent.
Napoli are also missing shotstopper Alex Meret (broken foot), left-back Miguel Gutierrez (muscle problem) and Romelu Lukaku (thigh).
Expected line-ups
Juventus possible starting XI:
Di Gregorio - Kalulu, Kelly, Koopmeiners - McKennie, Locatelli, Thuram, Kostic - Conceicao, Yildiz -Openda
Napoli possible starting XI:
Milinkovic-Savic - Beukema, Rrahmani, Buongiorno - Di Lorenzo, Gilmour, Vergara, Olivera - Neres, Lang - Hojlund.
Old Juve prediction
Napoli 1 Juventus 0
Although a 1-1 has been the most frequent ever result between these Italian giants, having occured 22 times, the lack of firepower from Juve and Conte's penchance of a tight defense points towards a low-scoring contest.
The Bianconeri's away record in Naples makes grim reading for Juventus fans, who last saw their side pick up a Serie A win at Napoli in 2018.
Should Conte manage to not lose against Juventus, then Napoli will remain unbeaten in Serie A games on their own turf for the calendar year., with 12 victories and four stalemates so far in 2025. The last time they achieved a similar feat was going unbeaten in 1987 with 11 home wins and three draws at their stadium.
