Saudi sides could sink Juve's Plan B for Luiz replacement

Although the Bianconeri's summer transfer market has been remarkably quiet, the Turin titans are still expecting to bolster their squad.

Unsettled central midfielder Douglas Luiz has admirers, but there’s been no concrete offers. The nearest to offloading the Juventus flop are a couple of potential swap deals.

One possible swap deal for the 27-year-old Brazilian involves Sporting Lisbon skipper Morten Hjulmand. The former Lecce star’s steep transfer fee remains an obstacle for an outright purchase, which is why an exchange is being discussed.

The Denmark international’s former manager Ruben Amorim at Sporting is showing keen interest to be reunited with the 26-year-old to Manchester United, which is one the reasons that Juventus have contingency plans in place.

Juve’s back-up options are also at much cheaper prices than landing Hjulmand. The England-based duo Yves Bissouma and Wilfred Ndidi are being seriously considered, but Al-Ahli FC are among the Saudi Pro League clubs monitoring the pair.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Bissouma has one year remaining on his contract, and has recently turned down initial approaches from Premier League sides. The 28-year-old has been strongly linked with both Everton and Juventus for the past month, and was offered to AS Roma and Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Juventus recently made an offer of €20 million (US$23m), which is short of Tottenham's asking price of €23.2m (US$26.7m). The Londoners are holding out for their full valuation, as Bissouma remains on the radar of top clubs in Germany and Spain.

Comolli, who enjoyed a successful three-year stint at Tottenham, still has a good working relationship with the Europa League champions, so could always push for Bissouma should the deal for Hujland collapse.

Serious about Spurs' star Bissouma

Ivory Coast-born Bissouma kicked off his playing career in Mali, before being poached by LOSC Lille in 2016.

He signed for Brighton & Hove Albion two years later, and sold to Tottenham in 2022. Bissouma bagged two goals in 44 appearances in what was largely an underwhelming 2024/25 campaign.

Leicester City’s Ndidi is another candidate who could add much-needed bite to the Juventus midfield.

The 28-year-old can play in central midfield or as a defensive midfielder. His aerial ability, blocking skills, physical prowess and fearless tackling would suit the rigors of the Italian top tier.

Ndidi available for a snip

As Leicester suffered a drop from the top flight to the Championship, which means his contract has a release clause available for just €9m (US$10.3m). His value just two seasons ago was €60m (US$69.1m).

Ndidi made over 200 Premier League appearances for Leicester, and won the 2020/21 FA Cup. He joined Leicester in January 2017 from Belgian Pro League's KRC Genk for €17m (US$19.6m).

The lucrative Middle East could be more tempting for Nigeria international Ndidi, although many players are turning their back on the Saudi top-flight.

Juventus remain way behind their rivals in strengthening their squad this summer, which is worrying for head coach Igor Tudor and the club’s fans.

Ideally new faces could be introduced in time for their friendly in Germany against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund on 10 August, Juve’s last warm-up match before tackling Parma in Turin on 24 August.
